While respiratory infections are common, frequently mild and self-limited in healthy, immunocompetent hosts, respiratory illnesses may cause significant morbidity and mortality in children and immunocompromised hosts. Lower respiratory tract infections and pneumonia are associated with significant mortality globally.
In Ireland it is estimated that pneumonia is the 3rd most common cause of death from respiratory disease. Rapid early pathogen identification has important treatment and infection control implications.
