Over 6,000 people are estimated to be living with HIV in Ireland and in 2019, there were 536 new HIV notifications to the HSPC, the highest on record. Around half of the new cases of HIV in Ireland are among men who have sex with men (MSM). There is a long pre-clinical phase with HIV infection so a significant proportion of those infected are unaware of their status.
Early diagnosis, and in turn treatment of HIV, prevents progression to AIDS and reduces the risk of onward transmission of the virus.
